Bob Toevs 4.0 out of 5 stars I do so in the hopes that the faults expressed will collectively make their way to the author, and the editors at Focal Press. First off, I can't say enough good things about the catalog of the publisher, Focal Press. It would be difficult to find another publisher that provides the breadth and depth of resources and subjects Focal does; I've devoured many of their titles, and not one has let me down. Many help guide publishers fill out their catalogs with shallow or vague treatments about the same subjects. Not Focal. They have a knack for issuing books that cut right to the chase.http://elitstroycraft.ru/source/electrolux-ewf-10240w-manual.xml

A major reason behind my purchase of this book was to find answers to my continual confusion about the differences between the 1000s of genres, sub-genres, and sub-sub-genres of dance music. In our media-drenched age, it seems that it takes merely 4 or 5 people who agree on a microscopic difference in a song or two to splinter off and recast them as a new dance music form. Thankfully, Snoman confirms my suspicion by stating more than once that honestly, differences between the dozens of genres of House music are so small as to be irrelevant. That's not to say that the subdivisions aren't necessarily valid, but simply that I shouldn't spend much energy worrying about playing a French-Hardcore-Techno-Trance-House track in a set of Appalachian-Ragga-Funk-Step-Garage-House music. Thanks for that, sir. While the theory section is necessary for this book to live up to its purpose, I agree with some other reviewers that Snoman does tend to assume too much in some of his explanations. In other words, HE certainly knows what he means on these occasions, but something is lost in translation to the reader. It's not a matter of being too technical; the fault is in the clarity of the writing. To put it plainly, there were several moments when reading this section during which I would have loved to have the author at my shoulder for a quick explanation of what he meant to say. Finally, there is the overall quality of the writing, and certainly the editing. I've never come across a Focal Press book that had any problems in this area, until now. The sheer number of errors in syntax, punctuation, and misuse of words makes this book a real struggle at times. It's worth slogging through, no doubt. However, as has been said in other reviews, multiple errors on a single page is TYPICAL (NOT 'atypical', as Snoman would insist). I want to make clear that this won't keep me from referring to this book as a valuable resource. But I cannot dismiss this aspect of the writing, either.

In such a case, the responsibility for keeping the copy clean, understandable, and, well, correct, falls on the book's editors. In this instance, they have failed. I hope that this critical flaw won't turn potential readers away in great numbers, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. I'm not proud that my first thought was to question whether or not English is Lars Pettersson's first language. If it is not, that would explain quite a bit about this book. Regardless, It's quite amazing that this book got to the printer in its present form, which makes me wonder how many Focal Press folks actually read it. Let's hope for a more enjoyable read in the 4th edition. I would think that this would result in more book sales, and that's always a good thing.Snoman does not waste your time with plugs for the latest software or gadget, but spent chapters of his book discussing every little nuance and detail of electronic dance music production with a solid emphasis on the analog fundamentals of sound synthesis, etc. For this 3rd edition, Snoman outdid himself, and this book is now better than ever. There are completely new chapters, and many previous chapters have been updated to reflect the latest music trends and technologies. The fundamentals are all still there, and I could spend hours studying some chapters of this book in front of my computer. His chapters on compressors, processors, effects, mixing structure, kicks and percussion, and sound design practice are very valuable. But there are some fundamental flaws with this third edition that need to be corrected in the next edition. These flaws should not stop a serious student of electronic dance music from buying and reading this book repeatedly. But they should be noted. First, the book is very poorly edited and full of typos and grammar mistakes - roughly 2 - 3 mistakes per page.

Second, Snoman's style is at times a bit too casual in a very colloquial British manner, and assumes a bit too much background knowledge on his readers' part. I often found myself struggling to follow what he was saying. But seriously, after reading this, I am no closer to understanding how these components come together to form a properly programmed lead. I mean seriously, how many contemporary synth tracks DO NOT use some combination of saw, square, triangle and noise oscillators passed through audio effects like filters and EQ and modulated by envelopes and LFOs. To some extent the burden is on my to catch up with Snoman - But if I were already at the level where reading these sentences I instantly knew exactly what Snoman meant to say and could fire up my favorite subtractive synthesizer and bust out a charming, perfectly programmed lead sound, then what would be the point of reading the book. I am the student, he is the teacher. But sometimes Snoman seems to forget that his audience is a bunch of newbies who need hand holding from time to time and seems more interested in having a casual chit chat with his peers about their craft. A third and final problem - which really isn't that big of a deal - is that Snoman's chapters discussing specific genres seem to miss the mark from time to time. Part of the problem is a problem of genre labels themselves. Snoman is sensitive to the fact that the minute you make a generalization about a genre, it is based on your subjective impression of what falls under the label. A lot of electronic music falls through the cracks, doesn't conform to any of the generalizations Snoman makes about any of the genres described in the book, etc. But I do not consider the genre discussion chapters to be the core strength of Snoman's book. The beauty of the book is really the first 19 chapters of fundamentals.

So even if your particular perception of the distinguishing features of a particular style is different from Snoman's it is not a big deal. And I have not purchased Snoman's video tutorials that are built around this book, but they may be the missing link that would make this book a 5 star product. But this book still has some room for improvement for the 4th edition. It'd probably be best digested slowly over the course of a very long time. I sat down and read it straight through and came away feeling like I'll never 'get there' because there's just too much to it. Also as the title implies, it's for DANCE music. If you're into non-dance electronic music you might not find it as useful.I would have titled different, it sounds simple but is not.,It includes charts, midi info, math. This is for people with some existing knowledge. A good tool if you want to explore in detail. It will stay in my library.Music theory, to general equipment to use, to even detail device descriptions and what they are used for. Many genres of dance music are also covered in here and many I didn't know existed. This book also covers DJing and promoting as for I didn't have interest in it before, but was very intuitive and fun to learn about. Book is well written with modern text and references as also references to classic machines and understanding. Book also covers a broad spectrum overview of everything including DAWs. Well written highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in how dance music is made or who wants to create it.I'm not at all into EDM, but 90% if not more of the text would apply to anyone making music with a computer and synth. It's one of the most informative books I've ever read on any subject and I recommend without reservation.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Sorry, we failed to record your vote. The publisher or printer's fault - not the author. I upgraded from the last edition and it was worth the upgrade, lost of additional info and improved structure. This and my Cubase manual are the only 2 references that I have permanently to hand.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. I feel that it flows easily from topic to topic. I am a complete novice to dance music and it's production but I feel this book takes you from the start with very little knowledge to helping you build a clear understanding of how dance music is produced. Thank you Rick Snoman for inspiring me and giving me the courage to even believe that I can understand this topic.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. DJ Exquiz 5.0 out of 5 stars And it also has a great introduction chapter on Synthesis and how synthesizers work that doesn't get bogged down, and also great chapters on mixing, eq, and mastering. I also want to check out These books are worth at least double, maybe even triple what they are selling for. Some of the information is invaluable - at least to me. The two editions are slightly different, as the first goes into a good deal of hardware and software, where the second edition drops this section, but goes into more depth on other topics such as synth programming, so if you want it all, get both editions, however either edition stands solidly on it's own. Having said that, the second edition is far more relevant to 2013 than the first edition, so if you have to pick one, get this one. (The second edition). In fact, this book is just the opposite. It's like Rick wrote a small book on each subject and then distilled them down to only the most important and essential concepts and then made each a chapter of this book. Every section is cram packed with useful information, and the knowledge gets both specific and practical. The techniques get a thorough treatment, and everything is explained within the context of the genres of dance music being discussed. This book is obviously written by a man who knows exactly what he is talking about, without ever being condescending or getting too technical to be useful. I have learned a TON in the last two weeks. More than I have learned in the last 2 years. For example, today I learned the structure of a dance music track, section by section, (and how it differs from a typical radio arrangement).

Maybe you knew that, but I didn't. Now I do. Want to know about sound cards? Covered. How to program a kick drum, bass, or lead? Covered. Cabling? Covered. Music theory? Covered. Hip Hop musical structure? Covered. Trance? Covered. Breakdowns of the TR909 and the TR808 drum machines? Covered. Pick something, and it's probably in here. It is truly impressive (and a gift) that Rick tried to tackle so many subjects related to Dance Music and cram it all into 1 book, and for the most part he does it with flying colors. He even gave the most clear explanation of music theory I have ever read, cramming it all into 1 chapter. A very detailed chapter. And, while this book doesn't cover some specifics of live performance or mixing on headphones, it absolutely covers gear setups from cables to mixers to audio units as well as in depth explanations about mixing and mastering which more than cover the needed skills. However, as valuable as all the information is, this book is still, at it's heart, a starting platform. This book is squarely aimed at the reader who wants to be the next great EDM, Hip Hop artist or producer, but maybe doesn't have the knowledge nor the skills to get there. This book provides a STRONG, holistic foundation of knowledge to build upon, is a reference book that will get used and worn out and is, at times, an inspirational piece. This book won't write music for you, nor replace a lot of hard work, nor make you a star, but if you want to do all those things, this book will give you a GIANT push in the right direction and provide an entire framework to work with in accomplishing those goals. For example, if you are a great producer, but don't know much about promotion, this book is worth checking out. So, is Rick Snowman an expert on dance music production. Yeah! In fact, he wrote the book on it.Cons: it feels pretty dated, makes very little reference to modern DAW software and might spend too much time at the low-level concepts. Occasionally tedious.

The cons are outweighed by the fact that what he's discussing still applies, even though it's largely been abstracted away. It just adds friction to the reading. I feel like the book could benefit from some better segmentation between the anecdotal and technical material. If you're considering buying this, be ready to either a) sit down and do the hard work of following along, almost like doing math drills, or b) spend some time picking and choosing what you're going to read. Overall though, I can't thank this guy enough for writing this.I bought this book about 3 months after starting my work on dance music (I had zero prior experience) and have now had the book about a year. The information contained within it has allowed me to progress quickly within the dance music genre. Snowman takes care to write in a manner that is friendly to beginners and pro's alike. Great book about a great topic. Answers many questions about musical theory, structure, techniques, equipment, etc. If it is at all related to dance music, it is covered in this book as the title implies. Best of luck to all fellow dance music hobbyist's and I hope this book serves you well as it did me.It goes into a lot of detail about the history of the different genres and also how to correctly engineer the final mix. It does not, however, go into any depth about techniques. I understand you can't apply techniques from one piece of software to another but there are a lot of concepts that do span software and hardware for that matter. I was hoping for a book with some industry secrets. This isn't that book. It is exactly what the title says, a manual, like the owners manual of your car. And just like your car's manual won't tell you how to pimp it out, this won't tell you now to really pimp out your sound.I have studied music and have a background in jazz, so I was a little bit apprehensive that there wouldn't be that much new material in this book, but there was a lot to learn.

I had no prior knowledge of drum beats or synthesisers so I had quite a bit to learn there. I was comfortable with the background music stuff although it's all explained in a very good way that makes sense. Coming from an acoustic background I also knew nothing of the technology side of things and again this has now taught me pretty much everything I know about that, from sampling to what the different effects do, and what they sound like. If anyone has an interest in making dance music, or even how it's made then this is the book for you. It covers so many different electronic genres it's not fair to call them all dance music. A 5 star intro in the world of electronic music.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again I can tell in the first place because this book is brillant and enjoyable to read,AN ITALIAN SPEAKING ENGLISH GUY IS STATING THAT. This book is recomended both for the begginer and the seasoned one,I make hip hop r n b funk soul rap music and this book made me gain more experience on how to achive better mixes although there are some things little things not very clear but as you go along by error and trial you will get there. I felt the need of making this review to support what is real and not like many books out there which, I unluckily bought, keep beatin' about the bush.I learned the hard way and I am still striving to evolve as a music mixer. SO no offence meant, peace y'all.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Shopping Cart Contact Us your name, e-mail address needs Get a quote.
